Tips on Proper Care and Maintenance of Sewage System

Maintaining a private septic system does not have to be very complicated or expensive but it can save you lots of money in the long run. It really comes down to 4 basic aspects:

  1. Inspections & Frequent Pumping:
    1. Conventional septic systems should be inspected by a MN Licensed Septic Professional at least once every three years.
    2. They normally need to be pumped out every 3 to 5 years.
    3. Alternative septic systems that have floats, pumps and switches should be inspected yearly.
  1. Efficient Use of Water:
    1. All of the water that leaves your home will end up inside of the septic tank.
    2. Leaky toilets can add up to 200 gallons of water and overwhelm the septic system.
    3. Installing a more efficient toilet and showerhead can help to conserve water more easily.
    4. Spreading out loads of laundry throughout the week is easier on the septic system than doing multiple loads back to back.
  1. Disposing of Household Waste:
    1. Always remember that a septic system or sewer system is not the same as a garbage.
    2. Everything that goes down the drain, disposal, toilet or laundry will end up inside of the septic tank.
    3. Only human waste (liquid and solid) and toilet paper should be flushed down the toilet.
    4. Limit the use of a garbage disposal.
    5. Avoid pouring fat or grease down the sink drain.
  1. Caring for the Drainfield:
    1. Liquid waste flows out of the septic tank and into the drain field component for further treatment.
    2. The drainfield in your yard uses a combination of nature and technology to remove contaminants from liquid waste.
    3. To prevent damage, don’t park or drive on top of the drainfield.
    4. Don’t flood the drainfield. Direct water from downspouts or sump pumps away from the drainfield or leach field area.
    5. Tree roots can cause damage or clog the drainfield. Always make sure to plant trees a safe distance away.
