What Is A Septic System Compliance Inspection?

What Is A Compliance Inspection?
A septic system compliance inspection is an Evaluation, Investigation or Inspection conducted to issue a Certificate of Compliance (COC) or a Notice of Noncompliance (NON). These professional inspections are required throughout the State of Minnesota.
- It is meant to determine if an onsite sewage treatment system is a Threat to Public Health and Safety.
- Indicates if the Septic Tank is watertight below the correct operating depth.
- Indicates if there are other conditions that may impact public health of fail to protect groundwater. Conditions include Electrical Hazards and Faulty Sewage Tanks.
- Soil Boring for verification that the drainfield meets the required vertical separation distance according to state or local code.
- Shows if your sewer treatment system is compliant with operating permits or if any nitrogen practice is in place and operating.
Certificates Of Compliance (COC)
A COC indicates that your Subsurface Sewage Treatment System (SSTS) is compliant with state regulations at the time of evaluation. This compliance certificate is valid for 3 years for an existing septic system.
Notice Of Noncompliance (NON)
A NON gives notice that your SSTS does not meet state requirements at the time it was inspected. There are 2 different designations for Noncompliance. The first NON is for Imminent Threat to Public Health or Safety. The second is for Failing to Protect Ground Water. Each NON must indicate a time frame to Repair, Replace or Upgrade your septic system to bring it up to state or local regulations.
Who Can Do My Septic Compliance Inspection?
Septic Compliance Inspections must be conducted a person Certified by the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency (MPCA), an Advanced Inspector, or a local government employee registered by the MPCA.
