What is a Septic System Biomat?
A Biomat is a slimy, black layer of decomposed organic materials and anaerobic bacteria that forms in the soil on the sides and below the drainfield. As the Biomat grows it begins to clog the soil which can lead to Septic System Failure. Your MN Septic System Experts at Custom Septic, Inc. (CSI) can identify if your Septic System Problems are caused by Biomat Clogging and repair the damage.
How Septic Biomats Form
Most Minnesota Private Septic Systems rely on Aerobic Bacteria and Anaerobic Bacteria to organically treat household wastewater and sewage. An overload of wastewater into the oxygen rich soil creates an environment without oxygen. The more effective Aerobic Bacteria is replaced with the less effective Anaerobic Bacteria. This is where destructive Biomats are able to form in the soil beneath the drainfield. As the biomat grows the soil becomes less effective for sewage treatment.
Aerobic Bacteria and Anaerobic Bacteria
Aerobic Bacteria requires oxygen to survive and can be found in the Soil Treatment area of the Drainfield. Anaerobic Bacteria on the otherhand, lives with the absence of oxygen and lives inside of the Septic Tank. Bacteria is found in human waste. Aerobic Bacteria is much more effective for breaking down sewage so that it can be safely filtered back into the groundwater.
Septic System Problems Caused by Biomats
If the soil under the drainfield becomes saturated a Biomat may start to form. As it grows Biomat Clogging interferes with the function of the sewage treatment process. The biomat will not allow the effluent (liquid waste) to infiltrate into the soil. As a result the wastewater will begin to pond on top of the soil. Eventually you could end up with Septic System Failure and a Sewage Backup in your Minnesota home.
