Septic System Designs

Gravity Septic System

A conventional gravity system uses the pull of gravity to transmit effluent through the pipes to the septic tank. The effluent enters the septic tank, where solid materials separate from the liquid. Once separated, the solids sink and settle at the bottom of the tank, while the liquid flows out the opposite end, leading to the drainfield.

The drainfield consists of pipes that carry the liquid to gravel-filled trenches covered by topsoil. Because this system relies on gravity, the available depth must be substantial, and the terrain needs to be relatively level to ensure proper sewage treatment.

Sand Filter Septic System

A sand filter septic system is a solution when the location and soil conditions are not suitable for a conventional sewage system. This type of system includes not only a pump but also a sand filter, which provides extra treatment for the effluent. As the wastewater passes through the tank and is pumped out in controlled amounts, it then enters the sand filter. This extra step, called pretreatment, treats the wastewater before it flows into the drainfield.

One advantage of a sand filter is that it does not need to be installed below ground, making an above-ground filter a viable option when space is limited.

Pressure Distribution Septic System

A pressure distribution septic system is typically used as an alternative when a conventional (gravity) system is not an option due to depth restrictions. Instead of relying on gravity to disperse effluent, this system uses a pump that is either time-controlled or activates when the tank is full. The pump transports the liquid into a shallow drainfield, allowing for timely and even distribution that regulates the liquid level.

Because the system operates with a pump, it includes controls and an alarm to alert you if the system malfunctions. All septic systems with pumps are equipped with these additional features.

Mound Septic System

A mound septic system is an option when soil conditions do not support a standard drainfield. This can occur if the soil coverage is too thin, too dense, unable to properly filter the required amount of water, or if the location is subject to harsh environmental conditions. The effluent flows from the septic tank to a pump, which doses the wastewater into the mound.

In this design, the mound is a hill constructed above ground in a designated area, filled with gravel and sand to further filter the wastewater. Due to the need for mound construction, the cost of a mound system is typically higher than that of a system using a standard drainfield.

Aerobic Treatment System

An aerobic treatment system is not a typical sewage treatment system, but it is an option when a conventional septic system is not feasible for the desired location. This design uses oxygen to break down the wastewater, unlike other septic systems, which filter water through separation, sand, or gravel.

The effluent travels to the main section, called the aeration chamber. In this compartment, air mixes with the wastewater, allowing bacteria to digest and aerate the effluent, drastically reducing bacteria and harmful pathogens. This process effectively pre-treats the effluent before it comes into contact with the soil and the outside environment.
